Internet Marketing – What is it and why do I need to pay attention to it?

Internet Marketing is not some catch phrase or advertising fad. It’s a viable source of generating buzz, interest, and sales. Unfortunately, I think that this phrase has had some bad press due to so many marketers selling junk with it. We can’t really help what some people do or say, so I suggest you just ignore them.

Let’s take a look at the phrase itself for a moment. Internet marketing. Broken down, obviously, that means advertising something online. That’s all it means — nothing fancy. When you look at the application, however, things get more interesting. You see, Internet marketing, due to the very nature of the web, is different than traditional advertising methods.

Internet marketing embraces whatever the Internet is currently, and what it will become in the future. At first, this just meant banner and pay per click ads driving traffic to a sales site. These days it’s something more, and that is why you need to pay attention to it.

If it’s not about driving traffic, what’s it all about?  Internet marketing is all about creating relationships.

This came about because of what is known as new media. New media happened organically, and it has become the standard for communication online. I’m talking about blogging, podcasts, social networks, and human interaction taking place via the web. Internet marketing is no longer about getting your ad in front of eyeballs. It’s no longer about barking at people until someone gives in. It’s about relationships.

Over the course of the next few weeks, I’ll be writing articles focused on certain aspects of Internet marketing. The rules are changing, and what worked five years ago may not do so hot these days. So stick around to get an insight on what works now.
